ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC & PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES

1. ACADEMIC TEXT- An academic text is a kind of text that is commonly

characterized with being formal, studied, researched, objective, exact, direct,

and has the ability to influence its readers. Moreover, an academic text is written with precise organization in order to help its readers to have a basic understanding of what the author’s arguments are that include the writer’s insights.

2.REACTION PAPER- a form of paper writing in which the writer expresses his ideas and opinions about what has been read or seen. Reaction paper is evaluated due to the writer's communication skills and only then due the unique ideas and the content. This paper writing may be informal, two pages long. As all essays, a reaction paper comprises introduction, body, and conclusion. In introduction the writers states the main premise, in a body he expresses his ideas and in conclusion summarizes the results. The reaction paper is not a summary of the article although information should be included.

3. CONCEPT PAPER- Concept papers are summaries of projects or issues that reflect the interests, experience and expertise of the writer or organization. Concept papers generally serve the purpose of providing in-depth discussion of a topic that the writer has a strong position on, usually with the intent of obtaining funding for that project from donors. The terms "concept paper" and "proposal" are often used interchangeably as they can be used for the same function. The concept paper may also be used as an instructional tool that may have developed as a result of extensive research, committee input and/or as a result of the outcome of a current project. In addition to providing guidance for implementation of a program, a concept paper could also discuss best practices, philosophies and other related issues that the writer believes action should be taken on in the near future.
